Brian Espy (Graphic Communication, '99) is the president of Doghouse Promotions, a company that has specialized in branded promotional gear for more than 20 years. His business relies on a global supply chain and was hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, but Espy has managed to pivot and adapt by offering new essential items, including hand sanitizers and protective masks.

Like many small businesses, Doghouse is trying to stay afloat during these difficult times and keep staff on payroll, while also giving back to the local community as much as possible.

"I've been sheltering in place and recently took a drive downtown and it really hit me how hard this is affecting our local businesses," Espy said. "I love San Luis Obispo and it's heartbreaking to see what everybody's going through."

Tracking early reports of the pandemic in China through his suppliers there, Espy looked into options should the virus reach our continent. He was able to convince one of the Chinese manufacturers of promotional products he works with to start sourcing up to 50,000 protective masks per week to import to the U.S.

Because he made arrangements early, Espy was able to secure a certified and reliable factory for much-needed masks that have been in short supply. Additionally, Doghouse offers other custom safety masks that are made in the U.S. Ten percent of the masks that they import are donated to local medical professionals and others in SLO County through facemasksforsloco.org. Espy has also partnered with a local distillery that has similarly switched their business to making hand sanitizer during the crisis to distribute a new product.

Doghouse Promotions has care packages available that include snacks, hand sanitizers and masks that can be donated for a discounted price to front line relief workers that include firemen, healthcare workers etc. For more information, visit doghousepromotions.com
