John "Jack" George (GEOL '15) died January 27, 2005. He worked for Union Carbide as well as served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He is survived by wife, Helen, daughter Lynda, granddaughters, Sophia and Zoe, Son-in-law, John, eight step-grand-children, nine step-great-grandchildren, seven nieces and nephews, and two AFS daughters Nikki and Claudy.

Clarence Chiesa (AG '23), 98, died in San Luis Obispo, CA in February of 2003. He was a member of the Catholic Church of San Luis Obispo his entire life and a local bartender and restaurant owner for many years. He is survived by his daughters, Marion and Shirley, son-in-law Glen, son Richard "Sonny", as well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

Margaret C. Ditmas Coyner (HE '23) died February 25, 2005 in San Luis Obispo, CA. She was very active in several SLO organizations and is survived by her niece Barbara, nephew, James, three great-nieces, two great-nephews, one great-great niece, and a sister-in-law, Mary.

Elinar Anholm (ME '26) died in Morro Bay, CA on May 10, 2005 at the age of 100 years. He worked as a postal worker and is survived by his wife, Mary, nephews David and Donald, and nieces, Norma and Elaine.

Clyde Davis (GRC ’32), 89, died in San Luis Obispo in December of 2001. He was a retired railroad conductor for Southern Pacific Railroad at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife Bernice.

Joel Davis (MATH '32), 92, died in Searcy, AR, in September of 2003. He spent his career as a research chemist for Chevron Oil. He is survived by his wife Pauline and son Joe.

Charles Stone (ASCI '34), 88, died in Las Cruces, NM in August of 2002. He was a Herdsman and worked in the Animal Science Department at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He is survived by daughter Geraldine and granddaughter Sylvia.

Guy Jones (EE ’35), 84, died at Veterans Hospital in Loma Linda, CA in February of 2002. He was a journeyman electrician for 35 years. He is survived by his wife, son, four grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

Nicholas A. Marquart (AGBM ’35) died at his ranch home in May 2006, he was 90 years old. Nicholas was a rancher all his life on his family ranch where he was the fifth generation. He is survived by his wife Irene, two daughters Lucille and Nancy, his son Nicholas Marquart Jr., six grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Paul Plummer (DSCI ’36), 88, died in Blossom, TX at the home of his son. During his career, he tested milk for Challenge Creamery, he was a feed inspector, truck driver, carpenter, framer, and a cabinet maker. He is survived by Jon, M.D., Keith, Ph.D., and Rachel, R.N.

John A. Benton (ACRE ’39), 87, died in El Cajon, CA in November of 2003. During his engineering career, John worked with solar aircraft in San Diego, CA. He is survived by his wife, Mariella, his daughter Sally Ault and his granddaughter, Jessica.

Richard Hall (AERO '39), 85, died at Sierra Vista Hospital in San Luis Obispo in June of 2002. He spent his career in aeronautical engineering and taught at Cal Poly for 30 years in various engineering departments. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jean, son Stan Hall, six grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

Vernon G. Rush (EE ’36), died on May 16, 2006, at the age of 92. He spent 40 years with Pacific Gas & Electric and another 25 years as a San Jose division electric meter foreman. Vernon is survived by his wife Anita, children Sharon, Sandy and Tom, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Orson L. Scott (DSCI '39) died April 23, 2004 in St. George, Utah. He worked as a California State Highway Supervisor. He is survived by his wife, Norma, daughters Barbara and Dorothy, and son, Douglas.

Nathaniel Blankenship (AERO '40), 84, died in Olympia, WA in November of 2003. He spent his career with the Air Force, Post Office ad Evergreen College. He is survived by wife, Mary, and sons Ralph, Steve and Curtis.

William Ruffner, (EE ’40), 84, passed away in Lompoc, CA in May of 2004. During his career, William worked for PG&E in various steam generating plants, for Vandenberg Air Force Base and for the City of Lompoc from where he retired as the Electrical Superintendent. William is survived by his wife Betty, and children, Charles, Sharon Hecht and Susan Harris.

Donald Lykke, (AERO, ’41), 85, passed away in San Jose, CA, in July of 2005. During his career, he worked as an airline pilot captain for Pan American World Airways for 36 years. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Bernice; son, Chris, and daughter, Carol.

Ralph Southard (EE ’41), 81, died in Stockton, CA in June of 2001. He worked for 38 years with Pacific Telephone. He is survived by his wife Mazie and sons David and Douglas.

Norman G. Buhn, (AE, ’42), 81, passed away in Lubbock, TX in October of 2004. He worked for Pan American Airways for forty years. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, his daughters, Catherine and Jacqueline, brother, sister, and two granddaughters.

Raymond M. Schwab (CRSC ’43) passed away at home with his wife Mary in Terra Bella, California. Raymond spent 30 years with EDD placing returning Veterans’ in good jobs. He is survived by his wife, Mary his son Robert and daughter Marilyn Silva.

William Hoff (CRSC ’43), 79, died at home in Las Vegas in April of 2001. He worked in the agricultural industry in both California and Nevada for the duration of his career. He is survived by his wife Dorothy, daughter Carolyn, and sons William Jr., Carl, and David.

L. Richard Brown (ENGR ’44) passed away at St Joseph Hospital in Stockton, California August 10, 2005. He spent most of his career in the plumbing industry. L. Richard is survived by his wife Mary, his two sons Kenneth and Stephen and his daughter Diane.

Leland Hillis (AERO '44), 79, died in Kingsburg, CA in September of 2002. He spent his career with Pan American and Hughes Aircraft. He is survived by his wife Earla, sons Tom and Ray, and daughters Jeanine and Terilyn.

Delbert E. Smith, (AE, ’44), 76, passed away in August of 1998 in Eagle River, AL. During his career, he was a part of the Air Force for 33 years. He retired as Colonel. Delbert is survived by his wife, Rosella “Kelly” Smith, and children, Craig and Candace.

Willard Hagen (OH '46), 90, died in Pasadena, CA in August of 2003. He worked as a landscaping and tree trimming sales agent for Dish Network, Consultant for Trees and as a nursery manager for 9 years. He is survived by his wife Ruth.

Joseph Brown (ASCI ’47), 76, died at home in Templeton, CA in September of 2001. As a farmer, he raised sheep and cattle and sold wood and tree trimmings. He is survived by his wife Evelyn, sons David, Dale, Dennis, and Donald, and by his daughters Diane and Darlene.

Donald Wheeler (CRSC ’47), 80, died in Gridley, CA in March of 2002. He was a nurseryman, self-employed farmer orchardist. He is survived by his wife, son, daughter, and five grandsons.

Kenneth Beck (AG TECH ’48), 78, died at home in San Luis Obispo in February of 2002. He was a rancher on Carrisa Plaine and grew wheat and barley since 1943. He is survived by his wife Jean McPhee Beck, son Greg, son Stephen (& wife Deb), daughter Brenda (& husband Neil), daughter Joni (& husband Rob), and 8 grandchildren.

Hans Hansen (DSCI ’48) died in San Luis Obispo, CA in May of 2001. He was a Packing house Manager and worked in the citrus and ranching businesses. He is survived by his wife, five daughters, ten grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

Maurice E. Holly (ENGR '49) died on June 21, 2004 in Fresno, CA. He worked as a journeymen and a teacher. He is survived by wife, Eileen, daughter, Maureen, and three grandchildren.

Edgar W. Jenkins, Jr. (EE ’49), passed away in Gretna, La., at the age of 79. He spent 13 years with Shell Oil Company as the supervisor of communications for the Southeastern District. After that, he struck out independently as the owner and president of Trident Communications and Trident Telecom Engineering. Edgar is survived by his daughter Pamela Jenkins.

Philip M. Katz (HORT ’49), 49, died in Santa Barbara, CA in May of 2004. He worked for Pan American Seed Product as the manager of cut flowers from 1995 until the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Wells.

Vernon Bebernes, (PE, ’50, MS PE ’60, MS EDUC ’60), passed away at his home in Santa Maria, CA, in April of 2005. He spent his career as a teacher. Vernon is survived by many loving family members including his daughter, Debra Bebernes-Buckler; son, Kenneth Robert Bebernes; brother, Kenneth “Moose” Wm. Bebernes.

Warren Black (AGSC '50), died in New Smyrna Beach, FL in June of 2001. He was Vice President of Shop Rite. Mr. Black is survived by wife Renate Black, Linda Warrett, Steven Black, and Dennis Black.

Joseph Griffin, (ENVE ’50), passed away in Clermont, FL, in September of 2005. During his career, he worked as a mechanical contractor for 25 years in Detroit, MI, and then Griffin Brothers Mechanical Contracting, Inc. Joseph is survived by his wife, Mary, seven children, 18 grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

John Park Guthrie, (ME, ’50), 80, passed away in San Diego, CA, in August of 2005. Mr. Guthrie served in the United States Nacy Naval Air Corps. After graduating from Cal Poly, he became a career employee of Solar Turbine, working on the testing and development of gas turbines. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shirley; his sister, Virginia Guthrie Handzlich; two nieces and four nephews.

Fred L. Hillman (EL ’50), Passed away In Lakewood, California October 24, 2005. He had a 35 year career with General Telephone Company. Fred is survived by his 5 children, 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

William Hunter, (CRSC, '50), passed away in Turlock, CA, in July of 2005. At Cal Poly, he played trumpet with the Collegians under the direction of Mr. Davidson. During his career, he was a shop and welding teacher at Turlock High School for 27 years. William is survived by his wife, Charliene, and three sons, Gary, Steven, and Todd.

Al B. Kolar, (EE ’50), 78, died in Long Beach, CA in June of 2003. During his career he worked in aerospace electrical design. He is survived by his sons, Scott and Dale Kolar, his daughter, Sandra Disco and 6 grandchildren.

James Palmer (EET '50 / ENG '54), 76, died in San Luis Obispo, CA in December of 2003. He was involved in many communication businesses, the last of which was called CTI. He retired in 1998. He is survived by his wife, Miriam; daughter Donna and son-in-law Rob; son Donald and daughter-in-law Sandi; son David and daughter-in-law Annie and four grandchildren.

William O. Park, (EE ’50), 78, passed away in June of 2004. William worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad for 41 years. He is survived by his wife, Helen Jane, his sons, William, John and Robert and his daughter, Jane Beiser.

Robert Rouminguiere (ASCI ’50), 76, died in Covelo, CA in November of 2001. He spent 50 years as a real estate broker, 23 years as Marin County Supervisor, and 22 years as Lake Co. Vineyard Owner. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, five children, and six grandchildren.

Victor Schmidt (ENVE '50), 83, died in Oakland in January of 2004. He spent his career with the Berkeley Radiation Lab. He is survived by his brother Paul, and nephews David, Paul and Larry.

Fred M. Smith, (OH ’50), 81, passed away in his home in Glendale, CA, in July of 2004. During his 35 year career, Fred worked as an Agriculture and Science teacher in LAUSD. He is survived by his wife, Mary Margaret, son, Edson, daughter, Roxana Rascoe, and 3 grandchildren.

Keith Uncapher (MATH '50), 80, died in Los Angeles, CA in October of 2002. He was a computer pioneer who founded the USC's Information Sciences Institute. He led the institute for 14 years. He is survived by his wife, Doris, and two sons, William and Jeffery.

Carl Amend (ARCE ’51), 74, died in Sonora, CA in January of 2001. He worked for 36 years with FMC. He retired in 1987 as Director of Facilities, FMC Research and Development Center. He is survived by his wife Veulah and sons Chris and Michael.

Peter J. Benedetti, (DS, ’51), 80, passed away in San Leandro in July of 2003. During his career, he was a Regional Administrator for Milk and Dairy Foods. He also worked for the State of California doing important work in the development of “The Real California Cheese.” Peter is survived by his wife, Margaret.

Stanley Diekman (HORT '51) died in Modesto, CA on December 24, 2004 at the age of 78. He worked as a high school teacher and is survived by his wife Jane, daughter Susan, sister, Sally, brother, Richard and one grandson.

Fletcher Harris (ASCI '51), 82, died in Santa Maria, CA in January of 2002. He had worked as an Agricultural Biologist for the Riverside County Department of Agriculture. He is survived by sons, Bill and Richard, two granddaughters and a great grandson.

Richard Hornbostel (DSCI '51), 81, died in Tulare, CA in October of 2002. He was a cost analyst for the State of California Department of Agriculture. He is survived by wife, Elaine, son Robert and daughter Beth.

Herbert Kop (ME ’51), 73, died at UCLA Medical Center in May of 2000. He retired as ME at Rockwell International after 29 ½ years. He traveled worldwide as a project engineer building electronic manufacturing plants. He is survived by his wife Ellen, son Garrett, daughters Avis and Beverley, and seven grandchildren.

William Kyle, Jr. (EET ’51), 79, died in Modesto, CA in November of 2003. He is survived by his wife of 22 year, Nancy Johnson Kyle, son Geoffrey Scott, daughter, Susan Diane Kyle, brother Nicholas Greenwich and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Dick G. Lowe (EL ’51) passed away on April 5, 2005 in his hometown of Sacramento, California. He was 83 years old. Dick worked for many years as an electrical and mechanical engineer for Caltrans. He is survived by his wife Mildred and children Doug, Janet and Gary.

Phillip Martinelli (AG '51), dies in Reno, NV in May of 2002. He was the Director of Plant Industry for the State of Nevada. He is survived by his wife Eva, son Dr. Lawrence Martinelli, daughter Diane dePolo, and seven grandchildren.

Phillip Morton (ARCH ’51), 74, died in Placerville, CA in May of 2001. Phillip was a contractor from 1951-2001. He built schools, jails, post offices, banks, and other large buildings. He is survived by his wife of 48 years Mabel, sons Mark and James, and daughter Connie.

Franklin Powers (ASCI '51), 73, died in Boise, ID in September of 2003. He worked as a livestock rancher in California, Montana, Nevada and Idaho. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth, son Sean and daughter Lucinda.

Jack Ready (BIO ’51), 75, died in San Luis Obispo, CA in May of 2003. He worked in the title and banking business before becoming a realtor. He served as a trustee for the Bankruptcy Court of Central California and enjoyed teaching real estate college courses at Cal Poly and Cuesta. He is survived by wife Shirley, son Paul and daughters Kay, Sue and Trisha.

Jerold L. Segall (ASCI ’51) died on June 8, 2006 in Palms Springs, California at the age of 78. He owned and operated an auto repair shop for 35 years. Jerold is survived by his wife Elenor, daughter Donna, son Dan and four grandchildren.

Dwight Kelley (ME '52), 75, died in Lemoore, CA in May of 2002. He worked as a private contractor for the Point Mugu Naval Air Station for 38 years. He enjoyed outdoor sportsman activities and auto racing of all types. He is survived by his ex-wife, daughter Jane, son Dwight Jr., and his eldest brother Clyde.

Theo Pappas (EL '52), died in Hillsborough, CA in February of 2002. Eldetco, Inc. was founded and presided over by him until his passing. He is survived by his wife Lorraine Pappas.

Frank Timmerman Jr. (DSCI ’52), 79, died in Oakdale, CA in December of 2001. He was a feed mill manager and the owner of a trucking business. He is survived by his wife, 2 sons, 2 daughters, 8 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild.

Richard E. Tobias (ARCE ’52) passed away on March 7, 2005 in Corvallis Oregon. He spent 35 years as a partner in the firm Jeppsen, Miller and Tobias. Richard is survived by his daughter Julie Weiss, his 4 sons Kipp, Rick, David and Mitchell and 3 granddaughters’.

Randolph Bradley, Jr. (BIO '53), 72, died in Catalina, CA in February 2003. He worked as a firefighter for 36 years. He is survived by his wife Diana, daughter Debra and sons Robert and James.

Frederick Brienen (DH '53), 73, died in Ventura, CA in August of 2002. He was a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy for 25 years.

Richard Crabill (ASCI '53), 71, died in McArthur, CA in December of 2002. He served in the US Army from 1953-55 and later taught Agriculture at Big Valley High School. He was nominated into the California Ag Teachers Hall of Fame in 2002. His son, Brent survives him.

George Kunimoto (OH ’53), died at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, California, at the age of 78. He was the owner and manager of Cupertino Landscape Company. George was heavily involved with the California Landscape Contractors Association (CLCA) and selected as Member of the Year twice (1776 and 1985). George is survived by his wife Kimi, children Laura and Swayne and grandchildren, Garrett, Imari and Walter.

Glenn W. Rich (AGEN ’53), passed away in Grants Pass, Oregon at the age of 87. He spent 28 years as an Ag Engineering Professor at Cal Poly, followed by his role as Foreign Student Advisor at Rogue Community College for four more years. Glenn is survived by his wife Marjorie, four children, Susan, Wendy, Tim and Ted and six grandchildren.

Don Siemsen (BUS ’53), 72, died in Cayucos, CA in May of 2003. He worked as a sales representative for Eli Lilly & Co. for 34 years and as an adjunct instructor at Cal Poly for the Orfalea College of Business for 12 years. He is survived by wife Joanne, sons Jeffrey, John and Clay, daughters-in-law Karan, Virginia and Lisa, and grandson Lucas.

Edward Crowell (ME ’54), 71, died at home in Orlando, FL in October of 2001. For 37 years he worked for Walt Disney Co. as Vice President for Facilities Support. He is survived by his wife, son, two daughters, two step-sons, one stepdaughter, sister, nine grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

Howard Keene (ME ’54), 69, died at home in Forest Grove, OR in March of 2002. He worked as a mechanical engineer in the aerospace industry (Douglas Aircraft, Lockheed, Boeing, and on the Joint Venture Team with Northrup/Boeing on the manufacturing of the B2 Stealth). He was also a member of Calvery Christian Fellowship Church. He is survived by his wife and three daughters.

Lloyd Work (PHYS ’54), 84, died in Santa Maria, CA in January of 2002. He was an Associate Professor of physics at Cal Poly. When he retired he enjoyed commercial fishing and traveling. He is survived by his wife Margaret, son Roger, and daughters Carolyn, Patty, Susan, and Sally.

John M. Rogers (CS ’55) passed away on June 30, 2006 at the age of 78. Throughout his career he was in fuel distribution as well as a self-employed rancher. John is survived by his wife Donna and four children, Robin, Kimberly, Laura and Scott.

Duke Johnson (El '56), 74, died in Placerville, CA in June of 2003. He spent his career with GTE and retired in 1987. He is survived by his wife Lillian, son Mark, daughter Leisa and three grandchildren.

Vern F. Highley (JOUR ’56) passed away in Fresno, California at the age of 72. He was a former US Department of Agriculture Marketing Administrator. After that, Vern owned Highley Associates, a firm that lobbied for federal and state government relations in Agriculture. He is survived wife Patricia, sons Sydney and Stephen; and stepson Dan Rakes, Jr.

Rodney W. Horning (AERO ’56) passed away on October 5, 2005 at home in Sandwich, Ma. After graduating, he worked for many years at Barry Controls and then Technical Manufacturing Corporation for the past seven years. He enjoyed traveling worldwide with both companies. He is survived by his two daughters, Allison Horning and Stacey Militello and eight grandchildren.

Donald MacPherson, Jr. (AERO ’56), 67, died in Lancaster, CA in June of 2002. He was a Flight Test Director EAFB-Rotary Wing/Dept. of the Army. His wife, four children, four grandchildren, two sisters and one brother survive him.

Neil Maloney (ASCI '55) died November 19, 2004 in San Luis Obispo, CA. He worked as an entrepreneur as well as in real estate. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, three children, ten grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

William Plate (ASCI, ’56), passed away in Fresno, CA in July of 2005. During his career, he worked as a teacher, rancher, and cowboy. William is survived by his wife, Eyvonne, and four children, Fred, Tami, Keri, and Debbi.

Eugene Verkuyl (ASCI '56), 71, died in Sonora, CA in November of 2002. He taught at Los Gatos High School from 1968-91 where he was the FFA Advisor. He is survived by his wife, Janet, two daughters and a son-in-law, four grandchildren and his twin brother Leonard Verkuyl of Florida.

Peter J. Cutino, (PE ’57), 71, passed away in Monterey, CA, in September of 2004. During his 26-year tenure as head water polo and swimming coach at Cal Berkeley, he was awarded four NCAA and Pac-10 Coach of the Year titles. He also led his teams to eight national championships. Prior to coaching for Cal, Peter was a teacher at Oxnard High School in CA. Peter is survived by his wife, Louise, his children, Paul, Peter Jr., and Anna and by his five grandchildren.

Bernard Stone (SOCS '57), 73, died in Carmichael, CA in January of 2002. He was a Youth Authority Parole Officer. He is survived by his wife, Ann, and children, Jon, Kim, Lyn and Guy.

Robert F. Woodward (SS ’57) passed away in December of 2005, at the age of 75. He worked for many years with the Shell Chemical Company and Western Farm Services of Fresno, California. He is survived by his wife Marilyn, and daughters Laurie Klein and Melanie Johnston.

Wabern Barnes (ASCI '58), 69, died in Clovis, CA in October of 2001. He taught agriculture at Lemoore High School for 13 years and was part owner of Best Weigh Scales in Fresno for 23 years. He is survived by his wife Elsie, four daughters and seven grandchildren.

Willis E. (Eddie) Bergfield (MATH ’58), Passed away in Thousand Oaks at the age of 74. He worked for Hughley Helicopters, as well as on both the F-15 and F-18 aircraft. He also spent time working on the Polaris Missile, Mark 17 Missile and Tomahawk Missile. Eddie is survived by his son, two daughters and three grandchildren.

John Cutler (ASCI '58), 65, died in Exeter in December of 2002. He spent his career in land management and cattle ranching. He is survived by wife Sue, daughters, Suzie, Sara and Laura and sons David, Rick and Darren.

William Harvey (ASCI ’58), 71, died in Apple Valley, CA in May of 2002. He worked for the USDA Forest Service and is survived by his wife JoHanna.

Ethan Jennings, Jr. (AE ’58), 70, passed away in Los Vegas, NV in October of 2004. Ethan’s career experience included large and small scale projects ranging from hospitals to luxury homes and office buildings. He is survived by his wife, Lillian and children, Joyce Quaglino, Jill Jennings, Jeri Via, Ethan Jennings, sisters, Emile Kramer, June Weber, Mary Sawatzky, brother, John Jennings and seven grandchildren.

Donald Patton, (DSCI, ’58), passed away in April of 2005. During his career, he was a public accountant and member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary- Flotilla 27. Donald is survived by his four children: Susan Patton, Anne Patton, Tom Patton, and Jane Pinckney.

David Bartlett (ARCH ’59), 70, died in Murrieta, CA in May of 2002. He worked as a licensed architect in California, Ohio, and Florida and as licensed contractor in Mexico. He is survived by wife, Wanda, daughters Theresa and Cindy, son Frank and six grandchildren.

Gordon Chan (OH '59), 65, died in San Jose, CA in December of 2001. He was very active in the Santa Clara County farm community and owned T.S. Chan Nursery. He is survived by his wife Anita, Daughters Angela, Janet and Juliet, son in law Martin and grandson Tyler.

Clifford Crossman (ME '59), 71, died in Folsom, CA in November of 2002. He retired from Aerojet General Corp. in 1992. He was involved in developing the engine that brought the Astronauts back from the moon. He is survived by his wife, Janice, five children (including two Cal Poly alums) and seven grandchildren.

Clyde P. Glover, (AG ’59), 66, passed away at his home in Sequim, WA, in December of 2003. During his career, Clyde worked as an eligibility worker for the Madera Co. Welfare Department, as an owner/manager for Born-Glover Cabinets in Sequim, WA, and as an owner/manager for Good Health Natural Foods Store also in Sequim, WA. Clyde is survived by his wife, Dortha, his sister, Mary Beard and his brother, James.

George Loesche (PI ’59), 72, died in Arroyo Grande, CA in December of 2003. During his career he worked as a replacement manager for Egg City in Moorpark, Nipomo and Arroyo Grande. He is survived by his wife, Joyce, daughter, Debbie Breshears and son, Jim Loesche.

Eugene Lenz, (ARCE, ’61), passed away in Santa Maria, CA. During his career, he served 10 years in the United States Navy, worked in construction management, and was a part-time stockbroker. Eugene, who swam for Cal Poly from 1956 to 1959, competed in the 1959 Pan American Games and represented the United States at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome. He is survived by his wife, Ethel, two children - Scott and Todd – and three grandchildren.

Trulen F. Karnes, Jr., (MATH, ’62), 67, passed away in Manteca, CA in April of 2004. During his career, Trulen taught mathematics at Manteca High School for 32 years. In his retirement, he tutored with Give Every Child A Chance, a city-wide program he helped with for ten years. Trulen is survived by his wife, Judy, children Kathryn and Mark, and granddaughters, Jordan, Kameron, and Riley.

Michael Killeen (BUS ’62), 62, died in Kansas City, MO in July of 2001. He worked for 33 years for Mobil Oil Corp. He is survived by his wife Bette, sons Brian, Kevin, and M. Joseph and his daughters Cassandra and Erin.

Roger M. Moulin, (AE ’62), 68, of Templeton, passed away in July of 2004. During his career he worked as a flight instructor and examiner. Roger was also a fixed base operator in San Luis Obispo and chief pilot of the Vandenberg Air Force Base Aero club. Roger also served as an air attack pilot with the CA Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. He is survived by his wife, Lezlie Labhard, and brothers, Tom and Jerry Moulin.

Dr. Edward A. Scott, (AG CHEM, ’62), 65, passed away in Winlock, WA in January of 2005. During his career, he was a part of the veterinary faculties at Auburn University, University of Georgia, Michigan State University, and Oregon State University. Edward is survived by his wife, Shirley, sons Virgil and Shane and Seth, granddaughter, Zoey, daughter-in-law LaFawn, sisters Virginia and Ruby, and brother Barney.

James M. Cary (DS, ’63), 64, passed away on his farm in Marshall, MO in May of 2005. During his career, he worked twenty five years for Kraft Foods. At Cary Construction, he worked with his son, Brent, running heavy equipment. James was a farmer and cattleman. He is survived by his wife, Kathy, daughters, Robin and Jamie, son, Brent, 8 grandchildren, and one great granddaughter. One son, Todd, preceeded him.

Kenneth Hammer (OH '64), died in Astoria in April of 2002. He was an agricultural missionary and teacher in the Republic of Congo, Africa for 13 years. He was also a pastor at Naselle, Grays River, and Skamokawa United Methodist Churches from 1992-2002. He is survived by his wife Carolyn, and daughters Joy Hammer Price and Holly Hammer Anderson.

Viola C. Call (BIO '65), 82, died in Gig Harbor, WA in October 2002. She assisted husband, Dr. Tracey Call in teaching laboratory classes at Cal Poly in the Biological Sciences Department. Viola is survived by daughters, Cecelia Orme, Anita Andres, Cynthia Nielsen, Julia Phinney and stepson, Robert Richins.

Robert Cardoza (AGB '65), 59, died in Modesto, CA in September of 2002. Those who knew him say he was a tireless aid to his community, having founded the Cardoza Foundation to support local charities. He also served as co-chair of the Cal Poly Centennial Campaign as well as board chairman of the AAA. He is survived by his wife, Joan, and four children.

During his career, Phil, served in the Peace Corps in Columbia from 1963-1965, as a Castle & Cooke Management Trainee and Agronomist for Dole C&H in Hawaii from 1967-1970, and as a PCA/Branch Manager for WECO-Stockton. Phil also was the owner and business manager of Village Flowers and Gifts in Lodi, CA. Phil is survived by his wife, Kathleen, daughters, Cinda Coffey and Loriana Cody, and his mother Vera L. Cody.

Dr. Larry Easley, (HIST, ’71), 57, passed away in Las Vegas, NV, in September of 2005. During his career as UNLV tennis coach, he took the UNLV men’s tennis team to three conference titles and two individual NCAA championships. In addition, he had his California teaching credential and owned The Country Gentleman Pipe Shop in Morro Bay, California. David Mumford (ARCH '79), 46, died in Burbank, Ca in January of 2003. HE worked as an Imagineer at Walt Disney for many years and authored many Disney books. He is survived by Carole, Lady, Max and Dinah.

Candi M. Jones, (SOCS ’80, MA PSY ’98), 47, passed away at her home in Atascadero, CA in March of 2005. During her career, Candi worked as a Sergeant for the San Luis Obispo Sheriff’s Department, an investigator for the District Attorney’s office ad a counselor for the Family Care Network in San Luis Obispo, CA. Candi is survived by her parents Dr. & Mrs. Jack Jones, her sister, Sherri Jones Callinan, brother, Craig Jones and nephew niece.

Michael McGrath (GRC ’80), 47, died at the University of Washington Medical Center in September of 2001. For the past 13 years he was a Senior Account Supervisor at Graphic Arts Center in Portland, OR. Prior to that, he worked in the printing business in Boston and Phoenix. He is survived by his wife Patricia, son Ryan, and daughters Mollie and Allison.

Al R. Alexander, (CM ’81), 47, passed away in Roseville, CA in September of 2004. Al was an avid outdoorsman and skier. His work experience included casino and themed interiors. Al is survived by his wife Annie, and three children, Brandon and Chase and Kara LeAnn.

Michael A. LaPointe, (ED, ’81), 60, passed away at his home in Martinez, CA in May of 2005. During his career, he was a teacher at Arroyo Grande High School. Michael participated in the Fullbright Teacher Exchange in England, and worked at Del Oro Continuation High School. He also coached tennis, soccer, and football at Campolindo High School. Michael is survived by his wife, Mary Anne, children Jann and Stefan, and brothers Stephen, Richard, and Robert.

Lisa Stratton, (NRM, ’81), 40, passed away in San Jose, CA, in January of 1998. During her career, she managed one of Santa Clara County’s largest landscape maintenance companies. She is survived by her husband, Steven, and her children, Lauren and Andrew.

David Graham (NRM '82), 47, died in Los Osos in August of 2003. He had a long career as a lifeguard for Los Angeles County and as a State Park Ranger K-9 officer. He is survived by his wife Anne and son James.

Kathleen A. Horizon, (JN ’82), 44, passed away in Sacramento, CA, in January of 2004. During her career, Kathleen worked as a legislative intern with Senator Leon Panetta and as a carpenter at California State Exposition (Cal Expo). Kathleen is survived by her daughter, Noel, and her father, Russell.

John W. Milhous (ARCH ’82) died on March 2, 2006, at the age of 47. John was a principal at SIM Architects in Fresno, California. He is survived by his wife Sheryl and three children Daniel, Michael, Amanda and Samuel. Both Daniel and Michael currently attend Cal Poly.

Elizabeth Berg Bertocchini (CFD '83) passed away May 5, 2006 after a long battle with cancer. She worked as a teacher in the Lodi Unified School District pre-school program. She was an avid snow and water skier and spent time with her children on their jet skis. Susan is survived by her husband, Victor, and her three children Daniel, Ethan, and Haley Bennett.

Clifford Brixey (ESCI ’83), 47, died at Stanford Medical Center in November of 2001. He was a computer software engineer in Silicon Valley. He was self-employed and working on his own software program at the time of his accident. He is survived by his father Glenn, mother Melcena, and sisters Coraima and Carolyn.

Tresa Macis-Guaspari (BUS/ED 84/89), 39, died in Sacramento in February of 2002. She worked for the State of California as an Administrative Officer for the Water Quality Control Board. She is survived by her husband, son, and daughter.

Christopher Newton (BUS ’84), 38, died while aboard Flight 77 (which hit the Pentagon). He was a CEO for work/life benefits in Cypress, CA. He is survived by his wife Amy, son Michael, and daughter Sarah.

Pennyman "Lane" Page (EDUC '84), 68, died in San Luis Obispo in September of 2003. He worked at Cal Poly for 33 years.

Meredith Peters (BUS ’84), 43, died in Dublin, CA in October of 2003. Se was an Administrative Executive for Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Meredith is survived by her father, Roger Peters, her brother, David and her sister, Laurel Koeneman.

Reid Goldenstein (OH ’85), passed away in Visalia, California April of 2002. He owned and operated his own Irrigation supply company. West Valley Supply is located in Visalia and Lemoore. Reid is survived by his wife Sue, his two daughters Maggie (11) and Emily (7) and his brother and sister-in-law Kim Golenstein and Leslie Crawford (both also Cal Poly Alumni).

Melissa J. Kemp, (ARCH ’85), 41, passed away in Northridge, CA, in October of 2004. During her career, Melissa worked as a church secretary as well as an architect. She is survived by her husband, Robert, and her son, Joseph.

Paul Schwarm (CRSC/FRSCI ’85), 43, died in San Luis Obispo in April of 2002. He worked for five years in sales in marketing and thirteen years in production management. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

Michael Zakskorn (EE ’86), 45, died in Sacramento, CA in January of 2003. He worked as a Senior Electrical Design Engineer for the U.S. Army of Engineers. He is survived by wife Debbie and children Lauren and Ryan.

Martin Bartholomew, (EE, ’87), passed away in Saint Johns, AZ, in August of 2005. During his career, he spent eleven years teaching high school math. He is survived by his wife of fifteen years, Tambra Bartholomew, and their four children, Arika, Cambrea, Josephn, and Nolanni.

J. Philip Bromley (NSCI ’87), 93, died in Riverside, CA in November of 2001. He served on a number of teaching and administrative posts during almost 35 years of service to Cal Poly. He is survived by his wife Martha, daughter Sue Ellen Grogan and son Ray Patrick Bromley.

Patrick J. Ferree, (IE ‘87), 41, passed away in Fairbanks, AK, in February of 2004. During his career, Patrick worked as a project engineer for TRW Ballistic Missile Division of Redondo Beach, Engineering Systems Manager for the Fairbanks North Star Borough, and Computer/Network Support Specialist in the Department of Computing and Communications at the University of Alaska. He also owned a Net Tech Inc, a computer development company. Patrick is survived by his wife, Vicky, his parents, four brothers, three nieces and four nephews.

Connie Garcia (JOUR '88), 52, died in July of 2003. She consulted with Garcia & Associates working with more than 100 trucking firms in the 17 western states. She is survived by her husband Gary, sister Marilyn and brothers Robie, Mark and Matt.

Mary Coates (BUS '89), 39, died in Folsom, CA in February of 2003. She worked as a paralegal and office administrator. She is survived by her husband, Tim, daughters Courtney and Allison and parents Francis and Delores.

Daniel Macapinlac, (BUS ’92), 34, passed away in Walnut Creek, CA, in September of 2004. During his career, Daniel was employed by California Financial Advisors in San Ramon, CA. He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Robbie, and children, Gabrielle and Isabella.

Shannon Graham, (BUS, ’96), passed away in El Dorado Hills, CA, in November of 2005. During her career, she worked in sales for IBM. Shannon is survived by her husband, Michael, and mother, father, sister, brother-in-law, and nephew.

Edgar Hernandez (CE '97/ENGR '99/I&TS '99), 49, died in San Francisco in October 2002. He worked in construction and painting for 20 years and for Caltrans after receiving his degrees. He is survived by his mother, father, four brothers, five children, three grandchildren, and many life-long friends.

Andy Nguyen (EE '00) died on December 6, 2004 in Santa Clara, CA. He was employed by Cisco after graduating from Cal Poly. He is survived by his parents, three brothers, two sisters, brother-in-law, two sisters-in-law, and six nieces and nephew.

Alec Balliet (LARC '01), died in March of 2002. He worked for Nuvis Landscape Design Firm in Costa Mesa where he was well liked and thought to be very talented. He is survived by his mother, Lynn and sister Michelle.

Dawson Brooks (AGSC '01) died in Paso Robles, CA on May 29, 2005. He had worked as a construction foreman. He is survived by wife Nancy, daughter Ely, parents, Larry and Joan, and brothers, Yates and Lance.

Ian R. Hess, (CE ’02), 28, passed away in Pescadero, CA, in September of 2004. During his career, Ian worked as a project engineer at Ruggeri, Jenson and Azar and Associates in Pleasanton, CA. Ian is survived by his parents, Mike and Rita Zahradka, his brother, Rob and his sister, Taylor.

Osbaldo Orozco (SOSC '01), 26, died in Tikrit, Iraq in April of 2003. He was an All-American linebacker for the mustangs and served in the university's ROTC program while at Cal Poly. He was a soldier with the 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment based in Fort Hood, Texas. He is survived by his parents, four brothers and wife Mayra.

Stephanie J. Westrich, (BUS/HIST ’02), 23, died in San Diego, CA in December of 2003. She owned and wrote for Ramble On Publications. Stephanie is survived by her parents, Murray and Karen Westrich, and her brother Adam Westrich.

Brett W. Currier, (BUS, ’04), 22, passed away in San Diego, CA in November of 2004. He graduated cum laude in Business Accounting. As a junior at Cal Poly, Brett was hired by KPMG San Diego. Brett loved attending Cal Poly, as did his father and sister. He is survived by his parents, Camille and Bill (ARCH ’72), and sister, Jovan.

Rogelio Hernandez, (MLA, ’04), 34, passed away in Santa Barbara, CA, in June of 2005. During his career, he worked as community education coordinator for Planned Parenthood for SLO County. He is survived by his parents, Carolina and Rogelio; sisters, Margarita and Laura; brother, Alberto, and fiancee, Paige Demuth.

Cord Meier (CE '04) died in Healdsburg, CA on April 23, 2005. Cord worked for Carlile-Macy as a Design Engineer. He is survived by his parents, Robert and Donna, and brothers, Jerrod and Wade.

Charles Beymer, 73, died at home in San Luis Obispo, CA in August of 2001. During his career, he was the Librarian at Marquette, Cornell, and Notre Dame Universities. He spent 25 years at Cal Poly State University and left as Assistant Director of the Library. He is survived by his wife Kathleen and three sons John, David, and Bob.

Dr. Marjorie A. Cass, 96, passed away in Grover Beach in May of 2005. Dr. Cass was a dedicated teacher for 43 years, retiring from Cal Poly as a professor emeritus in 1974. During her career, she also taught at Stevens College for Women of Missouri, Iowa School for the Deaf, and Grinnell College of Iowa. She is survived by her brother, Lewis, and several nieces and nephews.

Dr. James T. Culbertson, (Professor), 92, died in San Luis Obispo, CA in July of 2004. During his career at Cal Poly, Dr. Culbertson taught classes in math, computer science and philosophy. His most successful book, Mathematics and Logic for Digital Devices, was put together from notes at Cal Poly. He is survived by his wife, Jean Culbertson and children, Betsy Miller, Hazel Daniels, Jamie Jordan and Sam Culbertson.

Dr. G. Day Ding, (ARCH ), 75, passed away in his home in Midlothian, VA in February of 2005. During his career, Dr. Ding served as the Dean Emeritus for the Cal Poly School of Architecture. He is survived y his wife Maisie and children, David, Judy, Derek and Walter.

Charles A. Elston, (Professor), 94, died at his home in San Luis Obispo, CA, in July of 2004. During his career at Cal Poly, Charles taught math. He is survived by Charlotte Elston Reten and Dennis Rich Elston.

Paul Fratessa, 65, died at home in September of 2003. He was a noted structural engineer and owned his own firm in Oakland for over 20 years before becoming Department Head of the ARCE Department at Cal Poly. He is survived by his wife Mary-Jo, son Gregory and daughters Lindsay and Robyn.

Edward Glassco, 61, died in Morro Bay in November of 2002. He was a professor of mathematics at Cal poly from 1968-2002. He is survived by his wife Juliet, daughter Maureen, son in law Scott, and granddaughter Lorelei.

F. Sheldon Harden (FAC) died January 24, 2005 in San Luis Obispo, CA. He is survived by wife Dorothy and children, Michele, Maureen, Timothy, and Ann.

Harold Hendriks, 84, died in Milbank, SD in December of 2002. He was an associate professor of electronic engineering at Cal Poly from 1954-57 and full professor from 1957-78, when he retired. He is survived by his daughter Margaret and son-in-law Dennis, two grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

C. Dennis Hynes, 73 died in Salem, OR in July of 2002. He taught Biological Sciences at Cal Poly for 33 years. During his tenure he did extensive research on the biology of crane flies. He is survived by his wife Sandra, daughters Jennifer Caldwell Brown and Julie Hynes Walker and sister Kathleen Hynes Rudyke.

Herb Kamm, 85, died in San Luis Obispo in September of 2002. He was Editor of the New York World-Telegram and Sun, as well as, the Cleveland Press. He was also a long time professor and mentor at Cal Poly. He is survived by wife, Phyllis, and three sons, Larry, Lew, and Bob.

Dr. Paul S. Lansman, 93, passed away at Arroyo Grande Community Hospital in April of 2005. During his career, he was a Professor of Mathematics at Cal Poly from 1964-1979. He is survived by his wife, Marina Pitkyanen-Lansman.

Dr. Don C. Lemmon ( ME) died on April 12, 2005. He worked as a professor and is survived by his wife Liz, children, Donna, Tim, and Leah, son-in-laws Terry, Steven, and Larry, nineteen grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.

Ena Marston, 95, died in Arroyo Grande in September of 2002. She was an influential English professor at Cal Poly for many years. Her sister Frances Hogin, niece Patricia Hogin Kushlis and grandnephew Christopher Kushlis survive her.

Marjory Martinson, 93, died in San Luis Obispo in January of 2004. She founded the Home Economics department at Cal Poly where she served as department head from 1955-66.

Raymond Nordquist, 77, died in San Luis Obispo, CA in December of 2003. He spent his career as an architect and taught architecture at Cal Poly for 27 years. He is survived by his wife Lexie, daughter Brenda and son Eric.

David Thompson (BIO SCI), 85, died in San Luis Obispo in March of 2002. He taught for 41 years in Bio Science and was a summer Ranger Naturalist in Sequoia National Park from 1949-1991. He is survived by his daughter Connie, sons Hunter, Craig, and Alec, brother Gil, and sister Mary.

Graydon Williams, (MU), 76, passed away in Indianapolis, IN in February of 2005. During his career, Graydon taught music at the College of the Ozarks in Clarksville, AR, and at Cal Poly from 1970 to 1991. He is survived by Donna Neal Feaver, Don Williams, Evelyn Williams and 4 grandchildren.

Victor Wolcott, 79, died in San Luis Obispo, CA in November of 2001. He was a professor in the Cal Poly State University School of Business. He is survived by his wife Marie, son Paul, daughter Rosa, and step-daughters Cam, Karen, and Terri.

John Wordeman, 81, died in Arroyo Grande, CA in December of 2003. He was a professor and department head in the Graphic Communication department at Cal Poly. He is survived by his wife, Gay, son John and daughter Linda.
